4 Killed, Many Hurt As Thunderstorm Lashes AP

The IMD has warned that thunderstorms would lash both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for the next three days

Visahakapatam: Four persons were killed and many were injured as thunderstorms accompanied by gale winds lashed Andhra Pradesh since Saturday night. In addition, a woman from Vijayawada drowned in Bangalore when she and her five family members were trapped in their car in neck-deep water.

In Parvatipuram Manyam district, two fishermen drowned in Peddagadda in Pachipenta mandal while they were fishing in the reservoir on May 19. Strong gusty winds accompanied by thunderstorms sank the country boat and both were missing. They were Seetharam and Jogaiah. The bodies were found on Sunday.

In Jangamgutlapalem village under Medikonduru mandal in Guntur district, one person died and five were injured when they were struck by lightning. He was Battula Sambayya. Two children were among the injured. Two families travelling on two motorcycles were trapped in a hailstorm. They stopped the vehicles and took shelter under a tree. The injured were admitted into Sattenapalli government hospital.

In another incident, one person died on the spot when flying sheets of a temporary shed hit him during a thunderstorm. Sources said the winds blew the roof of the shed located near a petrol bunk in Srinivasapuram under Gopavaram mandal and the sheets fell on the 33kv power lines and the victim.

On Saturday evening, temporary sheds built for the workers crashed following the hailstorm in R5 zone in Amaravati area. Around 27 workers were injured.

The IMD has warned that thunderstorms would lash both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for the next three days due to a trough of low pressure formed, extending from western Bihar to north Telangana.

Thunderstorms may lash Anakapalli, ASR, Kakinda, Eluru, NTR, Palnadu, Prakasam, Nellore, Tirupati, Chittor, Annamaya and YSR districts on Monday, the weather office said.
