Ooty: Small tea growers in the Nilgiris have been asked to adhere to good agriculture practices to regulate growth in tea gardens to pave for quality tea production.
In a statement, Mr. C. Paulrasu, executive director of the Tea Board of India zonal office at Coonoor near here, said April-to-October is the period in which maximum growth and yield is obtained in tea crop and is called "rush period". During this period, manufacturing units also tend to involve in continuous collection of green tea leaves and production, thereby lowering quality.
To combat this issue, the District Green Leaf Price Monitoring Committee (DGLPMC) under the chairmanship of the District Collector and the Tea Board Executive Director, urges small tea growers of the Nilgiris to adopt good agricultural practices of pruning 25 per cent of each of the small tea growers' land holding to ensure quality tea.
This would also minimize glut of made tea at auction centres and ensure better prices for small growers, he added.
