Chennai: BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan has said the exit polls reflected the public perception that while Narendra Modi presented a picture of stability, there was no such guarantee in the opposition camp devoid of a consensus on leadership.
While DMK chief M. K. Stalin proposed Rahul Gandhi as their PM candidate, the Congress leader P. Chidambaram said the question could be tackled after elections, she pointed out.
The exits polls for 2019 general elections have predicted a comfortable victory for the DMK-Congress combine in Tamil Nadu, while the AIADMK-BJP alliance is likely to grab an average of 8 seats. At the national level, the BJP-led NDA is predicted to win more than 300 seats.
The BJP leader slammed Congress leader P. Chidambaram for his ‘unsavoury’ remarks on the Election Commission and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“After your silver jubilee of getting bail, when do you plan to surrender? Rahul and Priyanka go on pilgrimage only when it is time for elections? And then to Tihar after elections? Are you scared? Or power hungry? Or desperate?” she tweeted in reply to Chidambaram’s tweets.
Expressing his disappointment over the predictions of the exit polls, Chidambaram alleged that the Election Commission was sleeping on the job. “Our charge had been that the EC was sleeping on the job. Now, we can go further and say that the EC completely surrendered its independence and authority. Shame!” Chidambaram tweeted. In another tweet, he said, “Polling is over. Now we can say that the ‘pilgrimage’ of the PM in the last two days is an unacceptable use of religion and religious symbols to influence the voting.”
Meanwhile, BJP national secretary H. Raja said in a tweet, “the exit polls show the direction. The magnitude will be known on 23rd. But it is now clear BJP will get its own majority. Modi Again.”
He further said that an increase in voter turnout throughout the country is reflective of people’s desire to avoid a hung parliament. “There’s a question on who benefits from the increased voter turnout throughout the country during this elections. The reason for it is people’s desire to avoid a hung parliament at all costs.”
