Karnataka should release Cauvery water, says Rajinikanth

n SC order a victory for democracy: Actor.

Chennai: Tamil film ‘Superstar’ Rajinikanth, who was thought to be “soft” on the saffron party, described the scenario leading to the resignation of BJP Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa, as “a win for democracy” on Sunday while thanking the Supreme Court for upholding democracy.

“What happened in Karnataka yesterday was a win for democracy. BJP asking for some more time and Governor giving 15 days time was a mockery of democracy. I would like to thank Supreme Court for its order, which upheld democracy. Hats off to the Supreme Court which gave a good ruling,” the actor, who is yet to launch his political party, said while condemning the decision of Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala.

His comments come a day after BJP leader BSY stepped down as Karnataka CM without facing a floor test in the Assembly. “According to the Constitution, majority should be proved in the Assembly. The Congress-JD (S) is going to do it, and I see this as a victory for democracy,” he said responding to a question on the Assembly elections in Karnataka and its outcome.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the women’s wing of Rajini Makkal Manram, he said, “Whichever party comes to power in Karnataka, the government should implement the Supreme Court order on Cauvery water in letter and spirit. Let us not get into the technicalities of whether it is going to be an authority or a board. The court has given a clear ruling.”

In his humble opinion, it will be good if the control over dams (in Karnataka) rests with the proposed Cauvery authority, he said. Anticipating “government intervention” in the authority that has been mooted, he said, “let us see what happens in due course.”

On his plans for 2019 Lok Sabha elections and possibility of forging electoral ties, he replied, “The decision on contesting elections in 2019 will be taken when the elections are announced. The party has not yet been launched, but we are ready for anything. Also, it is too early to talk about any kind of alliance.” nTurn to P4
