Chennai: There was a little respite for Tamil Nadu from heat on Friday, as interior districts of the state witnessed widespread thunder storms, due to the convection activity. Maximum temperature in the city also came down due to the early onset of sea breeze.
According to S. Balachandran, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, heat wave conditions continue to prevail in north Tamil Nadu. “However, sea breeze played boon to the coastal districts, which saw a decline in the day temperature. Maximum temperature at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam are 39.2 degrees and 41.6 degrees respectively,” said the director.
Reasoning the sea breeze activity, weather blogger, S. Chandramouli said, “As westerlies are strong, they obstruct the onset of sea breeze. Though sea breeze set at 11.30 in Nungambakkam, there was a delay in reaching the airport, the reason why Meenambakkam sizzled.”
Even though the trough from South coastal Andhra Pradesh to Comorin area is running from South coastal Andhra Pradesh to Comorin area off Tamil Nadu coast, it influences no rain to the state, said experts.
“Rainfall is completely due to the convection activity. The trough is not yet active,” Chandramouli said. While Salem recorded 7.6mm on Saturday, Thirutani and Dharmpuri noted 3.6mm and 2mm respectively. “Rainfall activity would continue for the next two days,” Meteorological Centre said in a statement.
