No final decision on release of Rajiv killers: Centre
New Delhi: Dismissing a media report that it has rejected a proposal by the Tamil Nadu Government to release seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the Union government on Wednesday said no final decision has been taken as the “process of consultation” is still on.
Sources in the home ministry said the consultation process with the law ministry was on and that a final decision is awaited. The home ministry has sought the opinion of the law ministry on a letter received from the Tamil Nadu Government seeking the release of seven convicts.
“The process of consultation with the law Minister regarding the request of Tamil Nadu Government has not yet completed. No final decision has been taken,” a senior home ministry official said.
Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary K Gnanadesikan had on March 2 written to the Union home secretary seeking its views on the state government’s decision to remit their sentence. This is the second letter in the last two years that the Tamil Nadu Government has written to the ministry. The first letter was sent during the UPA government’s tenure in February 2014.
