Hyderabad: Doctor, RMP held for surgery racket

The state human rights commission saw media reports about the operations and directed the authorities to conduct a probe.

KARIMNAGAR: A general surgeon and rural medical practitioner (RMP) have been arrested for organising unnecessary appendicitis surgeries on schoolchildren and hysterectomy operations on women. The arrests were made in Koratla on Tuesday evening. The police is also looking for another surgeon.

Kathalapur police said the arrested people were Dr Tatipamula Suresh Kumar of Jagtial town and Dr Jakkani Ganesh, an RMP from Kathalapur mandal.
The two with the help of some quacks, carried out 557 unnecessary surgical operations in Kathalapur and Koratla mandals, police said, based on information received from health and medical officials.

The matter got exposed first through media reports. The state human rights commission had taken suo-moto cognisance of the operations and had directed the district authorities and the police to conduct investigations and submit a report.

A probe revealed that Dr Suresh Kumar and another surgeon Dr Manoj Kumar of Koratla had operated on children and conducted hysterectomies on women who complained of stomach ache. They took the assistance of RMPs and private medical practitioners (PMP) to organise large-scale surgeries and make big money for them, police said.

Based on a complaint from the victims of these operations, police booked a case against Dr Suresh Kumar and Dr Ganesh. The two were detained on Tuesday and produced before a court in Jagtial for hearing on judicial remand.
