Gear up for soaring mercury level in Chennai
Chennai: Temperatures across the city remained relatively normal on Wednesday, hovering around 35 degrees, but may rise from Thursday and reach their peak on Friday, predict weather bloggers and Met department.
However, interior parts of the state have already started witnessing high temperatures with the mercury touching 40 degree in six stations. Salem recorded the highest with 41.8 degree while other districts like Vellore witnessed temperatures of 40.3 degrees. Other stations like Tirupathur touched 40 with Karur and Dharmapuri also touched 40 while Tiruchy remained at 40.2 degree Celsius.
Usually, during this period, pre-monsoon showers begin in Chennai and bring relief from the hot weather. But for the past few days, no weather system has been active in the region.
When compared to places in Central India and cities like Hyderabad, which is facing heat wave, Chennai is doing comparatively better, say experts.
“Compared with other days, the heat was bearable,” said Meeta Pillai, a resident of Ambattur.
Interior parts of Tamil Nadu, including places like Madurai, Tiruchy and Coimbatore, would continue to face high temperatures with very little possibility of rains, said Y.E.A. Raj, former deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre.
“By end of April and first week of May westerly winds will bring convectional rain and thunder showers,” he said adding that easterly wind could bring moisture content from Bay of Bengal. On Wednesday, temperatures in Chennai remained at 35 degree Celsius. In the entire state, the overall humidity varied around 70 to 80 per cent.
