Kerala: Striking farmers' health deteriorates

The action council claims the backing of the entire village for the fast that has entered the 4th day.

KALPETTA: Hundreds of people visited the venue of the agitation of farmers as their indefinite fast entered the fourth day on Tuesday. They are protesting before the Wayanad Wildlife Warden's office in Sulthan Bathery alleging failure to stop crop raids from the wild. Members of Wayanadan Chetti Association and Vadakkanadu Karshaka Samithi visited the Vadakkanadu Grama Samrakshana Samithy protesters.

The action council claims the backing of the entire villagers. Wards 1, 2 and 3 of the Noolpuzha village panchayat has 2000 households and more than 6,000 population. They are the most affected by the elephant raids. Fr Joby Mukkattukavunkal, its chairman, said the health condition of M.K. Mohanan, Shyne V.C. and Nikhil George had worsened.

“We have alerted volunteers for replacement in case the police shift them to the hospital,” he told DC. The lack of personnel at the Taluk Hospital also affected timely checking of their health conditions. "We demand the district collector to come and assure us of precautionary measures to check animal raids into human habitats," he said. “Like animals in the jungle, humans also have the right to live. It is up to the forest department to avoid human-animal conflict.”
