Hyderabad: An assistant manager of Gangavaram Port in Andhra Pradesh was suspected to have been charred to death when his car caught fire on the Outer Ring Road near Sultanpur village in Sangareddy district on Wednesday.
Police identified the victim as G. Venkat-agiri, 40, a resident of Bowrampeta. He was going to the Gangavaram Port head office in Jubilee Hills in the Maruti Suzuki Celerio (TS07 GM 4666) on the Outer Ring Road when it suddenly caught fire.
The car was engulfed in a blaze within seconds, leaving Venkatagiri, who was at the wheel, to escape.
Ameenpur inspector Prabhakar said that commuters on the ORR noticed the car burning and informed the police. The fire brigade from Patancheru fire station was pressed into action and they doused the blaze. But it was too late to rescue Venkatagiri.
“We received information about the fire at about 11.30 am. We realised that a person was present in the car only after putting out the fire. A case has been registered for the probe. It is too early to comment about the cause of the fire,” the inspector said.
He said the victim was identified as Venkata-giri based on the registration number of the car.
The car was registered in the name of his wife G. Sridevi on January 25. The police found that Venkatagiri had fastened his seat belt.
Witnesses told the police that smoke had started coming from the engine when the driver stopped the car alongside the ORR, but he could not get out.
There was a suitcase in the car which reportedly contained some cash that was gutted.
The inspector said that the body was completely charred.
The skeletal remains were recovered and sent to the Patancheru Government Hospital for a post-mortem and would be handed over to his family.
