Nellore: Limit politics to elections, Venkaiah advises leaders

Vice-President opens Necklace Road on the banks of Nellore Tank.

Nellore: Vice-President, Venkaiah Naidu has called upon the people's representatives and leaders to set aside their political affiliations and pay special attention to development. He told them that their party activities should be limited to the elections and not beyond.

Mr Venkaiah Naidu addressed the gathering after inaugurating the Necklace Road constructed on the banks of Nellore Tank at a cost of Rs 30 crore under Amrut scheme near Irukalala Parameswari temple on Wednesday.

Referring to his roots to Nellore and his familiarity with every part of the city, he said he was immensely happy to launch development works as a son of the soil. He said he was emotionally attached to Nellore and fond of the region, including Penna river water and winds from lush green agriculture fields in the rural areas of the district.

“Though I was offered plum portfolios, I had chosen rural development in the Centre with an objective to develop infrastructure in the rural areas” Mr Venkaiah Naidu said.

He reminded that he had allotted 11.31 lakh houses for poor to AP out of 75 lakh houses sanctioned countrywide during his tenure as Union minister for urban development.

He dwelt at length on various institutions sanctioned at his instance for Nellore region including NIOT, Regional Institute of Education, Kamadhenu scheme, Skill Development Centre, four major roads under Sagara Mala scheme, CBIC, VCIC, Rs 1,100 crore estimated underground drainage and water supply improvement scheme for Nellore among many other projects. He thanked the state government for its cooperation.

The Vice-President praised Andhra Pradesh urban development minister P. Narayana for implementing the projects devised under 'Nellore Next' programme, an initiative of Deepa Venkat, his daughter.

He said he was ready to extend his cooperation to any development activity pertaining to Nellore district though there were certain restrictions being the Vice-President.

Mr Narayana said he was fortunate to become urban development minister when Mr Venkaiah Naidu was in the same post at the Centre and this had helped him to implement many development programmes effectively.

Mayor S.K. Abdul Aziz, NUDA chairman Kotamreddy Srinivasulu Reddy and others were present.
