Kurnool: Basic facilities still a dream for Alisher Baugh residents

Kurnool: A third of Kurnool lives in squalid conditions with no hope of breathing fresh air, drinking clean water and defecating in a clean environment.

Alisher Baugh of ward number 2 in Kurnool Municipal Corporation is a living example of dirt and filth that envelop citizens since years. With no elected representatives for wards, comprising Municipal Corporation, the officials have scant regard for the problems, said Nazeer, a resident.

Municipal commissioners just decorate posts and wait for good postings, leaving civic problems to the wind, said another resident Basha.

According to Kurnool Municipal Corporation records, out of the total population of 4,60,330 in Kurnool, 1,54,367 live in slums. Majority of them are leading their life as daily wage labourers, under employed labourers, seasonal labourers etc.

At present, there are 104 settlements in the town, out of which 57 are notified and 47 are non-notified slums. The condition of living environment such as roads, drainage facilities, housing, electricity, basic education, health etc. are bad but has no hope of any improvement. Kurnool municipal commissioner Prashanti was not available for comments. She was not available on the official phone.

“Miserable conditions reflect official apathy and elected representatives’ inaction in bettering the lives of the people,” he said.

However Maddaiah, a sanitary officer who has jurisdiction over ward number 2,said that he would clear off the wet silt and keep drains well.

As per the 2011 census, Kurnool has a population of 40,53,463 of which male and female were 2,039,227 and 2,014,236 respectively. The literacy rate is 77.37 per cent. The population density of the city is 8700 per sq.km.

The population growth is 14.85 % as of 2011. The sex ratio of the city is 988 females for 1,000 males
