Kannur killings: Stop violence, now'

Victims of such violence are always people from ordinary families.

Thiruvananthapuram: After a week, prominent writers have issued a joint statement condemning the killing of Youth Congress leader T.H. Shuhaib in Kannur. They said the murder was a new turning point in a series of political killings in Kannur as the victim belonged to no parties traditionally involved in such violent politics.

The signatories include poets K. Satchidanandan, KG Sankara Pillai and Rafeek Ahamed, critic B. Rajeevan and writers Paul Zachariah and T. D. Ramakrishnan.
Victims of such violence are always people from ordinary families. No leaders of political parties get killed in such violence. Leaders are still in safe havens. There is even competition among parties to increase the number of their martyrs, it says.

The series of murders questioned the very foundation of democracy, culture of dialogue and concept of social justice. It is a fact that people behind such crimes have ulterior motives. Such violence is spreading to other parts of the state. "We appeal all political parties and individuals to take necessary steps to end violence," said the statement.
