Hyderabad: Cops held for extorting money from spa owners
Hyderabad: Three Hyderabad City policemen, who were part of the DCP team of West Zone, and a cab driver involved in extortion, were arrested by the Hyderabad Central Crime station on Tuesday.
The suspects impersonated as sleuths from the city taskforce wing and demanded money from a spa owner at the Banjara Hills, threatening to book a false case against him.
The suspects were identified as Kateeb Ahmad, 57, head constable at Begumpet police station, Bojjagani Venugopal, 36, constable from Chatrinaka, Peri Vijay Babu, 31, constable from Langerhouz, and cab driver Banavath Shashi Kumar, 25.
According to the police, one R. Raju, owner of Luxury Spa at the Banjara Hills, approached the station on February 12 with a complaint.
He said he was running the spa with a licence from the GHMC and had a manager, three therapists-cum-beauticians and a telecaller at the spa.
On February 8, around 6 pm, the suspects barged into the spa saying they were police personnel from the taskforce and detained the four girls and the manager in a room and demanded '3 lakh from Raju for not booking a case.
When Raju expressed inability to pay the amount, they brought it down to '1.35 lakh. On Raju’s request, one of his friends brought the cash and gave it to the suspects.
