5-member BJP panel to probe Meenakshi temple mishap
CHENNAI: The state unit of the BJP on Tuesday constituted a five-member fact-finding team to probe the fire mishap at the renowned Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwar temple on February 2 and submit a report on the incident to the party high command. Party president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan who announced the constitution of the high-level committee to probe the fire mishap at the world famous Meenakshi Amman temple, said the probe would be thorough and the committee would submit a report to the state leadership within 10 days.
Former DGP Balachandar who heads the panel is the BJP state executive member. Former judge Arumugam and V K. R. Srinivasan, who are the party's state executive member, Prof. Rajalakshmi and advocate Kanakaraj are the members of the committee. Dr Tamilisai had earlier this month announced the constitution of an independent probe committee on behalf of her party to “bring out the truth.”
A major fire broke out on the premises of famous Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai resulting in the destruction of about 40 shops. Though none was injured in the late night incident, the hall that accommodated the shops was partly affected. The State government had formed an expert committee to inspect
the Vasantharayar mandapam, where the shops were gutted, and suggest steps for renovation.
