Telangana: TV set top boxes case reserved

Mr C. Ramachandra Raju, counsel appearing for the petitioner, said that there was no compulsion in the law to instal set top boxes.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Monday reserved its orders on a petition challenging a notification issued by the Centre asking cable TV subscribers in urban areas in AP and TS to purchase set top boxes by January 31, 2017.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Shameem Akhter was dealing with a petition by Citizens Welfare Society. The petitioner contended that the order was violative of Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution.”

Mr C. Ramachandra Raju, counsel appearing for the petitioner, said that there was no compulsion in the law to instal set top boxes. He said the choice should be left to the viewer. Mr B Narayana Reddy, assistant solicitor general, said many states had implemented the notification.
