Telangana farmers can sell onion at Rythu marts

The officials were also instructed to ensure that farmers get at least Rs 11 per kg.

Hyderabad: The state government has accorded permission to onion growers to sell their produce directly in rythu bazaars. This decision was taken to help farmers as well as consumers and curb the role of middlemen.

Marketing minister T. Harish Rao instructed officials of the marketing department to find suitable locations in all rythu bazaars for farmers to open sale counters. The officials were also instructed to ensure that farmers get at least Rs 11 per kg.

The minister asked the officials to take up an awareness campaign in Mahbubnagar, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts, where onion is the main crop. He took a serious note of high prices being charged by traders even though onion had become cheaper.

Mr Harish Rao said the government was providing seeds at 70 per cent subsidy to the farmers but they failed to get the minimum support price due to lack of marketing facilities.
