Protesters lock up Calicut University Vice-Chancellor and syndicate members

The Academic Council decided to start new facilities for special students to write examinations.

KOZHIKODE: Calicut University Vice-Chancellor K. Mohammed Basheer, PVC P. Mohan and the syndicate members were locked up inside the Senate Hall for over three hours on Saturdayby Youth Congress activists demanding to discuss and implement the last grade and watchman appointments. Later, around 5 p.m., the syndicate convened for an hour and decided to leave the matter to the advocate-general for legal advice.

The siege was inaugurated by Congress leader T. Siddique. The Youth Congress leaders had been observing a hunger strike for four days and they feared that enough members will not be there in the meeting to pass the resolution as LDF and Indian Union Muslim League were against the move.

The syndicate meeting was planned to be held after the Academic Council meeting held at the senate hall. To prevent the members from leaving the hall, the activists locked the senate hall.

Syndicate member K. Viswanath had complained to the Chancellor that the preponing of the meeting to Saturday from February 26 was against the rules.
The Academic Council decided to start new facilities for special students to write examinations. A new draft for the same was approved by the council.

As per it, those with 40 per cent handicap will get the service of a scribe/reader/ lab assistant. Prior to this, the candidate should obtain a certificate from a government-approved medical board. These candidates will get 20 minutes extra for every one hour.

The council approved the syllabus for add-on courses in MES college, Mampad (Bakery and Confectionary), MES College, Ponnani (Entrepreneur Skill Development) and SH College, Chalakkudy (Quail Farming and Communication Skill). Those who have passed BCom in annual pattern or CCSS-UG pattern can write the additional specialisation course after one year.

They dismissed a suggestion to make the new criteria for promotion of university/college teachers effective from January 1, 2015 onward. Instead, representatives of AKPCTA, ACT and AKGCT demanded implementation of academic performance indicator with effect from December 31, 2015.
