Jat stir: SC to hear petition moved by Delhi govt tomorrow

Petition seeks Centre's intervention for uninterrupted supply of water from Munak Canal in Haryana.

New Delhi: The Supreme court on Sunday agreed to give urgent hearing on Monday to the petition moved by Delhi government seeking Centre's intervention for the uninterrupted supply of water from Munak Canal in Haryana which is allegedly under siege of the Jat agitators demanding reservation.

Delhi government's senior standing counsel Rahul Mehra said the petition was mentioned before the Registrar, who marked the matter for hearing on Monday.

The petition was moved Saturday night in which a plea was also made that the Centre should deploy army to ensure supply of water from Munak Canal.

"Water should be supplied immediately to Delhi as it is lifeline of people," Mehra had said, adding all water plants in Delhi are shut as the protesters have "taken over" the canal.

Mehra had said the Lutyen's zone and several other areas are not getting water. "The army should ensure that Delhi gets water immediately," he said yesterday.

Delhi is staring at a huge water shortage in next one or two days with 60 per cent of water supply affected due to the Jat stir.
