Bengaluru: Panel for three-language formula wants Sanskrit in
Bengaluru: Kendriya Vidyalayas and CBSE and ICSE schools could be asked to strictly implement the three language formula till the last year of secondary education and the two language formula at the higher secondary level to help students learn Sanskrit, if the recommendations of a committee formed by the Union ministry of human resources development are accepted.
The committee set up to suggest a long term vision and road map for the development of Sanskrit over the next 10 years had on board Dr. H.R. Nagendra of the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana and Prof. Srinivas Varkhedi of the Karnataka Sanskrit University.
In it recommendations to the Union government it has noted that though most of the state boards have implemented a three language formula till class 10 and two language formula for classes 11 and 12, the CBSE, ICSE schools and NIOS, KVCs and NVs had a three language formula upto class eight and two language formula for classes nine and 10 and insisted on only one language for classes 11 and 12 .
“Not studying Sanskrit at the higher secondary level impacts the number of students studying it at the UG and PG level. So a direction may be given to these boards to strictly implement the three language formula till the last year of secondary education , that is upto class 10 and two languages in classes 11and 12,” the committee said.
Other recommendations include creation of Sanskrit cells in IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIITs, IISc, Central Universities and AICTE approved technical colleges in order to facilitate study of science and technology and inter- disciplinary study of various modern subjects and its corresponding subjects in the language.
The committee has also recommended setting up Model Sanskrit Medium Schools in every state to impart modern and traditional education in the language.
It has suggested including it as an optional language in the UG programme of science and commerce and other disciplines. Besides, in its view thesis or dissertations should also be written in Sanskrit for M.Phil, M Ed and PhD courses.
