Hyderabad: Alarmed at the steady increase of Covid-19 cases in the department, senior police officials have asked unit officers to ensure that those aged above 55 years, pregnant women and persons suffering from chronic diseases are given office work and are not assigned field work as a preventive measure.

According to officials, more than 800 police personnel drawn from the three commissionerates tested Covid positive and over 2,000 were hospitalised in districts during the third wave.

"Most of them worked outside attending bundobust duties. In January, hundreds of police personnel were found infected. Thankfully, there were no fatalities," senior officials said.

Thousands of policemen working in different wings are suffering from diabetes, hypertension and heart surgeries and other health issues. Keeping in mind the fatalities in the second wave, these decisions have been taken to protect the staff and their family members from coronavirus.

In every police station in the state, at least five to ten cases are being reported.

"By sending Covid-19 positive individuals to home isolation, we will plan shifts at police stations. Meanwhile, the regular complaints are being received from the people at all police stations by setting up special arrangements without causing inconvenience to people," officials said.
