Shashi Tharoor slams LDF government for crimes against women

For all its claims of 'Navodhanam' (Renaissance) in Kerala, the LDF has done little to prevent crimes against women.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress leader Dr Shashi Tharoor who is looking for a third straight win in the general elections from here has expressed concern over the growing crimes against women.

"For all its claims of reformation in Kerala, the LDF Government has done little to prevent crimes against women," he tweeted on Sunday.

He listed the number of crimes against women in the state capital, which includes rape, molestation, kidnapping and abduction, eve teasing 509 IPC, dowry death, cruelty by husband or relatives and others.

"For all its claims of 'Navodhanam' (Renaissance) in Kerala, the LDF has done little to prevent crimes against women. Sex crime rates have risen steeply & stayed high. Trivandrum is among the worst affected districts," he tweeted.

TheThiruvananthapuram MP highlights total crimes against women in the capital city during 2016 provided by the Kerala State Crime Records Bureau as 595 cases and in the rural district as 1,285.

During 2017, the provisional statistics provided by the KSCRB shows crimes recorded against women include 533 in the city and 1,240 in the rural district.
However, during 2018 up to October, the capital city witnessed 444 crimes against women and 978 cases rural, which shows women are at the receiving end.

Dr Tharoor also highlighted the graph of growth in crimes against women during 2007 - 2017 where it shows a decline during 2015.
