Hyderabad: Mentally-ill raped woman rescued

Taking advantage of her mental condition, unknown persons sexually assaulted her.

Warangal: A mentally-unstable destitute woman who was sexually assaulted by unknown persons and became pregnant as a result, was rescued on Sunday by the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) officials at Narsampet in Warangal Rural district.

District child protection officer G. Mahender Reddy said the woman, who is in her mid-twenties, used to beg for a living and sleep in the Narsampet bus station.

Taking advantage of her mental condition, unknown persons sexually assaulted her. She is now in the seventh month of pregnancy.

The locals brought the situation of the woman to the notice of the district collector M. Haritha who in turn asked the district welfare officer M. Sabitha to provide medical help to the woman.

Accordingly, the ICDS team including DCPO Mahender Reddy and D. Raju went in search of her on Sunday and found her roaming around the Narsampet bus station.

With the help of local Anganwadi workers, the officers tried to interact with her and counselled her. They took her to the Narsampet area hospital and also informed the local police station. She was given clean clothes and tests related to her pregnancy and health generally were conducted.

“Doctors found the foetus to be healthy and prescribed medicines for her. The caretakers of Amma orphan old age homeorphanage or old age home? in Hanamkonda are providing her shelter. The department will provide medical help to her,” he said.
