Traffic cops gheraoed for mindless' vehicle checks

Seeing this, other motorists on the stretch panicked to stop, even as members of the public gheraoed the three traffic cops at the scene.

Coimbatore: A traffic police officer's attempt to stop a speeding biker riding without a helmet led to a road mishap in Coimbatore on Saturday, sparking angry protests by locals who staged a road-roko demanding action against the traffic cop.

The traffic on Tiruchy road near Ramanathapuram Rajalaxmi Mills was blocked for up to two-km on Saturday after hundreds of motorists staged a road-roko demanding the traffic police not to stop speeding vehicles during peak hours and to claim responsibility for the mishap which was allegedly caused by the traffic cop under the pretext of routine vehicle checks.

The speeding motorist, who was sought to be stopped for not wearing helmet by a traffic policeman who ran towards the middle of the road, forced the biker to apply sudden break to avoid an accident. However, it ended in a collision with the driver of another bike being thrown off his vehicle and dragged for over 30-feet along with his bike and causing serious injuries for the youth.

Seeing this, other motorists on the stretch panicked to stop, even as members of the public gheraoed the three traffic cops at the scene.

The motorists also stopped their vehicles causing a huge traffic snarl for up to two-km distance and vehicular movement was affected for more than an hour.
On information, a team of more than 50 policemen rushed to the spot and pacified the public promising to take necessary action against the traffic police.

The injured youth was rushed to a nearby private hospital for first aid later on he was shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment. The injured youth was identified as Vijesh Kumar from Valparai.
