Hyderabad: The Musi river front walk was held on Friday on the banks of the Musi river by CMS Vatavaran an NGO, as part of the week long international film festival. The activists explained the benefits of beautifying the river and how it can be dangerous to health if it is neglected.
The stench erupting out of the river was a major concern to the students, activists, professors and other people who participated in the walk.
While educating the participants, Mr Ved Kumar said, “Active citizen participation is a must for cleaning the river and everybody should take pledge that they won’t throw any form of garbage in it. He also highlighted about the importance of segregating the solid and liquid waste.”
“Any liquid waste being diverted into the river should be treated first. Most of the industries surrounding the areas are huge contributors of polluting the river. The government must take immediate measures to segregate the waste management,” said Mr Ved Kumar.
Ms Anjali a student of Class 8 who came for the walk, said, “Today after listening to the reality of the Musi river I understood its historical significance and it was an eye-opener. Otherwise all these days I thought that it was just a nala which stenches always.”
The main idea behind conducting this walk was to create awareness among people about saving our rivers and to an extent this was successful, as many students, professors, and others participated. Film shows and a round table conference are part of the effort.
“The strength shows that everybody is concerned about their surroundings and wants to maintain clean rivers, but due to the ignorance of a few and authorities delaying work this is the condition of our rivers,” said Ms Anita, the organiser.
