Adilabad: The Railway Department is attempting to make railway stations safe for women by installing CCTV cameras under the Nirbhaya Fund allocated by the Ministry of Railways.
CCTV cameras are being set up at 78 major railway stations across six divisions, including Nanded of Maharashtra, and Secunderabad and Hyderabad in the South Central Railways zone.
Cameras may also be installed at other major stations in this zone such as Ramagundam, Mancherial, Bellampalli, Kagaznagar, and Adilabad. These cameras will help keep a watch on anti-social elements thus bringing down the incidence of crime against women, at railway stations.
A senior officer of the SCR said that CCTV cameras are being installed to create a feeling of security among the passengers, especially women. According to sources in the Railway Department, 1,938 cameras are being installed, and the feed will be monitored round-the-clock.
Officials say that the cameras will also help the railway and civil police control and track thefts, con-jobs and cases of child trafficking.
The Railway authorities are also planning to take steps to cut down the number of robbery cases in trains plying between Muthkhed and Adilabad stations. To ensurew this, they plan to increase the number of Railway Protection Force officers deployed on this route .
Sources also say that the Railway authorities are planning to install vehicle and baggage scanners and bomb detection and disposal devices at all railway stations at district headquarters.
