STEM education to reach more state-run schools

According to statistics from the education department, 25,000 children have undergone training under the scheme till now.

Bengaluru: To offer comprehensive education to girl students in the state, the state education department has decided to extend STEM courses (Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine) to more schools across the state. While 50 schools in and around Bengaluru have this facility now, it will reach 99 more schools in Dharwad and Mysuru from the next academic year.

Run by the Department of Primary and Secondary Education, the STEM programme is organised in associated with Qualcomm, a telecommunications equipment company, United Way, an NGO, and Swamy Vivekananda Youth Movement. Girl students in schools are equipped with skill-based education and dedicated STEM labs are set up in selected schools.

“The programme aims to nurture students by giving them the right mentorship and exposing them to exclusive activities, including special coaching, soft-skill training and industry visits,” explained an education department official. He said that it will create awareness on the importance of girl education and encourage community engagement.

According to statistics from the education department, 25,000 children have undergone training under the scheme till now. The plan to give away scholarships to meritorious girl students for higher education is also in the pipeline, officials said.
