Bengaluru: Worker dies after mud wall caves in at RR Nagar
Bengaluru: A 26-year-old daily wage worker died after mud caved in at a Storm Water Drain (SWD) in R.R. Nagar on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Madivalappa, a native of Kalaburagi.
He had shifted to the city two years ago with his wife, who is working in a garment factory. From past six months, he was struggling to get a job and only three days ago he began working with a civil contractor.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 3 pm, while Madivalappa along with five others were carrying out excavation work on a SWD, to connect an underground sewage water pipe near Padmavathi Meenakshi Kalyana Mantapa.
A portion of a mud wall collapsed on them. While five were rescued by other workers, Madivalappa remained stuck as the mud continued to collapse on him.
The fire and emergency service officials rushed to the spot and extracted the body after five hours of search.
The police said the contract for the work was given to KBS Company, owned by Ravi Hosakerehalli. The BWSSB had been carrying out the work for the past one month and the workers allege that the contractor did not take any safety or preventive measures.
City Mayor Gangambhike Mallikarjun visited the spot and announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the victim’s family. A senior officer said that R.R. Nagar police shall book the accused engineers under IPC section 304A (causing death due to negligence).
