Kochi: Amid growing global consensus for the necessity of sustainable and efficient mobility solutions, engineering students from Government Engineering College Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram have developed an energy-efficient vehicle that aims to achieve a mileage of 150 - 200 kilometres per litre.

The car has been developed by a 10-member team of final year mechanical engineering students named PRAVEGA.

They developed the vehicle for the Shell Eco-marathon, part of the Shell's Make the Future Live 2019, which is scheduled to be held in Bengaluru (STCB) from November 19 to 22.

"It took nearly four months to develop the vehicle prototype and the total cost is around Rs.3 lakhs. It is single-seat vehicle and its body is made of bamboo fabric composite which makes it lighter and more studier. The Bamboo Research Centre in our college helped in fabrication of the body," said Abhinav S Sekhar, team manager.

The team raised funds for the project through sponsorship and they also got assistance from the department. The team members also chipped in for the project.

Though two teams from Government Engineering have participated in previous editions of the Eco-marathon events, team PRAVEGA is debuting this year under the Prototype category.

The team has proposed the aerodynamic and eco-friendly vehicle design which they claim is the first of its kind to use over 75 per cent of eco-friendly materials.
