TIRUCHY: Thanks to the recent monsoon rains and with good replenishments in the flow of water in the Cauvery, the groundwater table has improved in the delta and other southern districts, of which Tiruchy district has recorded appreciable increase, according to the district collector S Sivarasu.
Speaking to a group of press persons accompanying the collector who visited various places on Tuesday including suburb Chathirapatti to see the functioning of the modernised primary agriculture cooperative society (PACB), he said there was no shortage of fertiliser anywhere in the district.
He said during last year paddy was cultivated in 38,860 hectares in the district. The target has been fixed at 50,000 hectares for the current year and he hoped that at least 44,000 hectares to 47000 hectares will be covered under paddy.
He said during the current year, loans to the tune of Rs 420.98 crore including Rs 180.91 crore, interest-free crop loans to 89,970 needy farmers through 148 PACBs across the district, have been disbursed.
Chathirapatti PACB president C Selvam said the PACBs common facilitation centre had received best performance award for earning more revenue, from the district administration for the last four years continuously from 2016.
Mr. Sivarasu also pointed out that there are nine full-time fair price shops and seven part-time fair price shops of the PACB functioning in and around Chathirapatti.
The joint registrar of cooperative societies G.P. Arul Arasu said modernised building for the 15 PACB’s across Tiruchy district have been constructed during last year, each at a cost of Rs 10 lakh, adding, it was planned to construct ten more buildings during the current year, each at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.
