Ensure party manifestos follow MCC: Hyderabad HC tells Election Commission

Counsel submitted that the EC would examine them only after the CEO forwarded the manifestoes.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Monday inquired from the Election Commission about the steps it had taken to ensure that party manifestoes submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer for the ensuing Assembly elections are in accordance with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice S.V. Bhatt was hearing a plea by city-based chartered accountant M. Narayana Charyulu, seeking to direct the Election Commission to implement the guidelines of the Model Code of Conduct in respect of election manifestos.
EC counsel Avinash Desai informed the court that the CEO had received six manifestos so far, and parties could submit their manifestos even on the last day of the campaign on December 5.

Counsel submitted that the EC would examine them only after the CEO forwarded the manifestoes.

The petitioner sought that the court make suitable amendments to the guidelines so that the candidates and political parties made themselves accountable to the public for which they had made promises.
