Tipsy man hacks dog to death, arrested

Later, Blue Cross of India (BCI) was alerted, and BCI general manager, Dawn William, rushed to the spot and held enquiries.

Chennai: In a bizarre incident, a man in a drunken stupor, reportedly hacked a dog to death on Thursday, following which police arrested and remanded him.

Police identified the man as J. Raja (48), resident of Palavanthangal. He was walking through Ragupathy Nagar, 16th street, when a dog owned by Krishnan of the same locality, started barking at him and chased him. Raja’s efforts to shoo away the animal did not work, and at one point he started to run, and escaped.

A traumatised Raja then planned to kill the dog. Taking a machete, he returned to the place, and started swinging it at the dog in a threatening manner.

The dog quickly scampered into a nearby tailoring shop, and Raja too followed it. As the tailor, Sundar, questioned him, Raja picked up a quarrel with Sundar, and pushing him aside, attacked the dog repeatedly, until it died.

Another woman, Malar (60), who ran a roadside eatery nearby, tried to intervene, but Raja allegedly threatened her with dire consequences, gesturing with his machete.

Later, Blue Cross of India (BCI) was alerted, and BCI general manager, Dawn William, rushed to the spot and held enquiries.

The BCI lodged a complaint with Palavanthangal police, who nabbed the accused and remanded him under judicial custody. Even Malar filed yet another complaint against Raja at the same police station.

A tense situation prevailed in the area for some time. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dawn William termed the incident ‘unfortunate’. “People should not disturb or kill dogs,” he stressed.
