NE monsoon may set in two days

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning is likely to occur in isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Chennai: With weather conditions turning favourable for withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from all over the country in the next 48 hours, the Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast that in the next couple of days, conditions for the much anticipated northeast monsoon is almost close at hand.

According to the RMC, most parts in south Tamil Nadu recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall, whereas it was sunshine in Chennai with a rise in temperature. But on Friday morning, there was a reversal in most parts of the city and suburbs, as several places received good rainfall. Rain-bearing clouds hovered over the city from Friday morning, giving a possible indication about the onset of the northeast monsoon.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a weatherman at RMC said, “Since the southwest monsoon would fully withdraw in the next two days, it could pave the way for the immediate onset of the northeast monsoon. The department is closely monitoring the weather pattern.”

Meanwhile, weather bloggers also have predicted similar weather conditions. “In the last couple of days, there is a lot of buzz about the northeast monsoon. Questions like when and how of the onset of monsoon has been dominating the thoughts of not only weather bloggers, but also the common man. It is also a period of anticipation for the farming community especially those who have sown crops anticipating the rains,” said K. Srikanth, weather blogger of Chennayil Oru Mazhaikkalam.
