Chennai: Police on Wednesday arrested a 23-year-old man on charges of raping a minor girl and impregnating her near Nerkundram.
The 16-year-old had consumed cleaning liquid on October 14 after her parents chided her knowing that she was pregnant. She was admitted to government women and children’s hospital in Egmore where she delivered a stillborn child.
Based on a complaint by the teenager's parents, police arrested the man, Sasi Kumar, a casual labourer. A native of Villupuram district, Sasi Kumar was staying as a tenant in the girl's house in Krishna Nagar.
Police investigations revealed that he had lured the girl into a relationship a year ago and had impregnated her. Recently, the girl’s parents found out that she was pregnant and had chided her.
The girl was seven months pregnant, a police officer said. Meanwhile, last Saturday, the girl attempted suicide by consuming cleaning acid after which her parents moved her to a hospital, where she delivered a stillborn child. The arrested man was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
