Tamil Nadu newborn with heart disease brought to Ekm
KOCHI: A two-day-old baby with serious heart disease born in a Nagercoil hospital is being brought to Lisie Hospital for emergency treatment. The ambulance with NICU facilities which started at 3.30 PM from Nagercoil reached hospital by 8.15 PM.
"The newborn with cardiac issues was referred to Lisie by Dr. Jeyasekharan Hospital in Nagercoil. The baby has to be put on ventilator support as oxygen level in blood dropped. However, the exact medical condition can be diagnosed only after examining the baby," said Dr. Thomas Mathew, paediatric cardiac surgeon at Lisie Hospital.
"The hospital has been getting several such references from hospitals in southern parts of Tamil Nadu as there are no centres providing paediatric cardiac care for newborns there," he added.
Meanwhile, the Life Save ambulance service of the All-Kerala Drivers Freakers (AKDF) sought support from the road users for smooth passage of the ambulance carrying the newborn.
"Doctors at Jeyasekharan Hospital requested our service to shift the newborn to Kochi as it requires emergency surgery in 48 hours. This is the 63rd mission of Life Save Emergency Medical Services Private Ltd. We have 9 ambulances with exclusive facilities to carry newborns with serious medical condition," said Rahul Karthikeyan, CEO of Life Save Emergency Medical Services Private Ltd.
