Sri Lankan navy arrest 5 Tamil Nadu fishers

The fishermen are all from Jegathapattinam in Pudukkottai district and had put out to sea on Wednesday.

RAMESWARAM: The Sri Lankan navy have apprehended five fishermen from Tamil Nadu and seized their boat while they were fishing in the Palk Straits near Neduntheevu off the sea coast here in the wee hours of Thursday and also seized their mechanised boat for allegedly poaching into their territorial waters.

The fishermen are all from Jegathapattinam in Pudukkottai district and had put out to sea on Wednesday. Their names were given as Vijendran,48, Ramu, 49, Ramkumar, 37, Sesu, 39 and Ganesan, 32, reports reaching Rameswaram said.

The latest incident has taken Rameswaram fishermen by shock and they wanted the Central government to condemn Sri Lankan navy's repeated action of this kind. All the arrested fishermen along with their boat were taken to Kankesanthurai naval camp and are being interrogated there, the reports said.

APPOINT JUDGE:

Meanwhile, all sections of society here on Thursday appealed to the government to appoint a regular Judge to the District Munsif-cum-Judicial-Magistrate court in Rameswaram, as they said the post has been left unfilled for the past six months. Though the Judge from Ramanathapuram court sits here for one day in a week, lack of a regular Judge is causing hardship to the litigant public as the cases have been piling up here for months together. Work on a new building for the court here has been going on at a snail's pace, people complained and urged expediting the construction, besides appointing a regular Judge at earliest.
