Kochi: With the Kozhikode-based Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS Ltd) slated to take up reconstruction of the Palarivattom flyover, the company officials held primary discussions on the work nature with E. Sreedharan, who will provide the technical supervision.
“We’ve expressed interest in taking up the work. The meet held at Kochi was over matters like work nature, resource mobilization and casting yard,” said a senior company official.
According to sources, all 17 reinforced cement concrete (RCC) girders of the 750-metre bridge will be demolished and replaced with new ones while pier and pier-caps will be strengthened using reinforced concrete.
“The work is being planned in such a way that the traffic movement will be affected the minimum. For this, the girders will be scrapped on the spot after cutting it into several small parts. All precautions like fencing net will be set up and the work mainly executed in the night when the traffic flow is less,” they said.
ULCCS Ltd chairman Rameshan Paleri held discussion with Mr Sreedharan at the DMRC office here.
The ULCCS has a track record for timely execution of major projects including the works of the PWD. The government order appointing them as the contractor for the work, estimated to cost Rs 18 crore, is expected to be out soon.
The partial demolition and reconstruction of the bridge is scheduled to start by October 1 and will be completed in a year. Mr Sreedharan, DMRC principal advisor, has already submitted the design and draft proposal to the state government.
The flyover, constructed at a cost of Rs 42 crore, has remained closed from May 1 after it developed potholes and the surface became uneven within months of its opening in 2016. A study by the IIT Madras found serious construction discrepancies.
