Bengaluru: The BBMP on Wednesday faced the ire of the judiciary over the poor condition of roads across Bengaluru. The Karnataka High Court, while coming down heavily against the city administrators, asked them to ensure pothole-free roads by Thursday.
The court made these observations while hearing a PIL, which stated that the all the stretches are filled with potholes that have cost people’s lives.
The division bench, headed by Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, further orally observed that it will take a decision if palike fails to fix the problem. “There should be zero potholes by tomorrow (Thursday). How you do it, is left to you. You have one whole night,” the court observed.
Referring to the number of potholes, which are around 1,600, the court pulled up BBMP officers.
Earlier in the day, the Palike faced some serious questions when it failed to produce a measurement book related to pothole repair works in the 198 wards in the city. The furious court warned of serious action and went on to say that it will ask the chief secretary to take over the administration of the Palike.
“Keeping roads in good condition is not just an amenity, but a necessity,” the court observed, adjourning the matter to Thursday. The high court also directed the BBMP to submit the measurement books and work orders of pothole repair works to the Registrar (Judicial) by 4.30 pm on Thursday.
