Northern TN to get more rains

Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the Andaman Islands and southern Bay of Bengal on September 19 and 20.

Chennai: Rains are all set to lash north Tamil Nadu, as depression has formed over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says that the depression will bring rains along with wind that would lash at a velocity of up to 70 kmph.

“There is a low pressure situation in the eastern-central part of the Bay of Bengal. Over the next 12 hours, this will turn into a depression. It is likely to become more intense. Due to this, the southern and central parts of the Bay of Bengal will experience strong winds up to 45 kmph this evening,” said S. Balachander, director of Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). The velocity of wind is set to intensify up to 65-70 kmph on Thursday as well.

Northern Tamil Nadu, which includes Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruva-llur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Vellore, Tiruvannamali, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Nama-kkal, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode, Karur, Tiruchirapalli, Ariyalur and Perambalur - is set to experience moderate rainfall.

Chennai and its suburbs will experience sporadic, moderate rains. Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Balachander said while Sriperumbudur, Chembarambakkam, Puducherry had recorded 4 cm of rain as of Wednesday morning Vannur, Marakkanam, Senji, Madurantakam, Poondi, Dindivanam, Poonamallee, Sholavaram, Thiruvallur had recorded 3 cm of rainfall.

Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the Andaman Islands and southern Bay of Bengal on September 19 and 20. They have also been told to keep away from the seas near Andhra and central Bay of Bengal between September 19 and 21.

A bulletin from the Met Department also said the sea conditions over south, central and north Bay of Bengal and Andaman sea will likely be rough to very rough.
