Telangana: Tech belt' liquor shops sought after

In Khammam district, 2,635 applications were received for 161 shops.

Hyderabad: The TS government earned a whopping Rs 200 crore till Tuesday 3 pm from the non-refundable application fee for liquor licences, up from the Rs 155 crore last year. The highest number of applications received was in Nalgonda, Warangal, Khammam and Rangareddy districts.

In the districts bordering AP, like Khammam and Suryapet, demand for liquor licences was high and applications were plentiful.

In Suryapet district, 1,697 applications were received for 71 shops. In Khammam district, 2,635 applications were received for 161 shops. Women also applied for liquor licences.

In Hyderabad, of the 183 shops, 140 received single applications. Shops located at Madhapur, Kondapur, Puppalaguda, Hitec City were much in demand. Some shops received over 20 applications. Tuesday was the last day for submitting applications.

Principal revenue secretary G. Somesh Kumar estimated that by the end of the deadline for submitting applications, the state would get Rs 250 crore in revenue.

The TS government had invited applications for 2,216 liquor retail shops across the state and had received 17,394 applications for 2013 shops by Monday evening.
