Ganja, phones seized from Mangaluru prison during raid
Mangaluru: Though jail authorities claim they have taken several measures to beef up security in the district prison in Mangaluru, ganja, mobile phones and other prohibited materials easily make their way into the prison.
A search operation on Tuesday, conducted by the police team, lead by DCP (Law and Order) Hanumantharaya, revealed that the prison still offered 'facilities.'
A police team, comprising about 129 constables and 50 officers, began their operation at 6.30 am and it lasted for about an hour.
During the search the police found two mobile phones, three sharp items, one ganja packet, two hooka type plastic bottles, mobile charger and also an extension cord.
Authorities had earlier claimed that they had set up a mobile jammer within the prison.
A Home Guard was also posted outside the prison to keep an eye on the adjacent road to ensure that nothing is thrown from the road to the prison.
However all these measures have failed, as most prohibited items were freely available inside prison. It may be recalled that the prison had witnessed violent fights among prisoners in the past.
On November 2, 2015 two undertrials Madoor Yusuf and Ganesh Shetty were killed in the prison.
