Odisha: Woman dies as ambulance fails to turn up

Villagers of Ghagudimala in Odisha carry a pregnant lady on a cot to hospital.

RAYAGADA (ODISHA): A pregnant woman on Monday died as she could not get 102 Ambulance Service. According to reports, Biranchi Hanshapansha of Ghagudimala under Kalyansinghpur block called up the 102 Ambulance Service to take his seven-month pregnant wife Dhaneya to Kalyasinghpur Community Health Centre (CHC). As the ambulance van did not reach on time, the villagers carried the woman on a cot to the hospital.

By the time she reached the hospital, she had developed serious complications due to bleeding. Soon after giving birth to a stillborn baby, Dhaneya died in the hospital. Angry over the incident, the local BJP activists led by district president Shiba Shankar Ulaka held demonstrations in the town. “It seems that the Odisha government has not learnt anything from its loss of face it suffered after Dana Majhi, a tribal from Kalahandi district, on August 24 carried the body of his wife after he was denied a mortuary van. Today we lost two precious lives due to the insensitivity of the state government which has failed to streamline the ambulance service,” said Mr Ulaka.
