Andhra Pradesh varsity stresses on hygiene

Higher education institutions and universities which maintain cleanliness in the campus will be rewarded with Swachhta Ranking'.

Visakhapatnam: Andhra University has taken up the cleanliness and hygiene drive in the campus on a priority bases, to ensure a good rank in the ‘Swachhta Ranking’ conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Andhra University Registrar V. Umamaheswara Rao said that the institution was taking part in the competition as per the direction of the UGC. “Efforts were being taken to improve the cleanliness on the campus, though it is a continuous process.”

Higher education institutions and universities which maintain cleanliness in the campus will be rewarded with ‘Swachhta Ranking’.

The University Grants Commission has issued a communication in this regard to all universities across the nation. Institutions that will be selected for the award will be invited to the National Swachhta Conference, which will be held in New Delhi on September 8. The Ministry of Human Resource Development will announce the rankings.

The criteria to be taken up for the ranking are the availability of toilets in hostels, toilet condition, maintenance, running water facility, academic buildings, garbage clearance in campus and frequency, garbage disposal system. Moreover, if any innovative technology being used for solid and liquid waste management, hostel kitchen hygiene, apparel of staff, the extent of mechanisation of food preparation, water storage, pipeline systems and quality of drinking water, green coverage of campus.

Apart from this, activities conducted by the institution outside campus have 15 per cent weightage. It means it will analyze whether any village or neighbourhood adopted and the outcomes achieved in spreading awareness about hygiene.
