Hyderabad: Now, the focus is on cricket kits
Hyderabad: The GHMC, instead of improving its sporting infrastructure, gives away cricket kits through corporators, which ultimately reaches corporators’ henchmen.
In the previous term, Rs 10,000 was spent on each cricket kit. The 725 playgrounds in the city are leased out for cricket camps. It is only during summer that camps are held for a month.
Also in the previous term, Rs 2 lakh towards gym equipment was sanctioned by the GHMC to 150 corporators. But community gymnasiums have not seen the light of the day in most areas. Some corporators are finding it difficult to start gyms in community halls due to lack of space.
Hyderabad mayor B. Rammohan said, “I have already inaugurated 10 modern gyms. The areas chosen for this facility include IS Sadan, Ramanthapur and Uppal. Each gym has 21 equipment with an investment of Rs 5 lakh. Gyms are being opened with an aim to help the youth and women work on their fitness levels. More sports complexes will be constructed.”
After the completion of the 2016 summer camp, GHMC sent out a circular to educational institutions allowing schools to rent playgrounds from 10 am to 3 pm by collecting fees. The money so collected would be spent on sports activities.
Private schools and educational institutions have been asked to enroll for the purpose. GHMC charges about Rs 3,000 a day for a 1,000-sq. yd ground.
