Godavari water level recedes but flood warning continues

The drinking water supply to 200 habitations and 10 colonies of Bhadrachalam town were hit as three intake wells submerged in floodwaters

Bhadrachalam: Flood warnings continued in Bhadrachalam on Tuesday even as the water level of the Godavari fell below the third warning level of 53 feet, to 51.7 feet, as officials anticipate water overflow from upstream areas. The water inflow as of Tuesday was at 13 lakh cusecs.

Meanwhile, the drinking water supply to 200 habitations and 10 colonies of
Bhadrachalam town were hit as three intake wells submerged in floodwaters.
The restoration work is currently underway, with the Singareni Collieries
Company Limited deploying motors of 1800 horsepower.

At present, drinking water is being supplied through tankers, with efforts
being taken to resume supply under Mission Bhagiratha by Wednesday. However, sources said it may take two more days to resume the supply.

As floodwaters continue to recede, clearing mud, plastic waste and garbage
is the biggest issue facing the town, with further reduction in the water
level of the Godavari, below the first warning level of 43 feet, set to
intensify the problem.

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao also emphasised sanitation works during
his visit over the weekend. Around 4,100 sanitation workers are currently
involved in the process, officials said.

Further, leaks through the sluice gates are being resolved with
high-capacity motors deployed to pump out water from residential areas, even
as power restoration was done in 230 of 240 habitations in Bhadrachalam
town.

As part of the rescue operations, 106 pregnant women were shifted to the
Area Hospital in the town, with 36 and 60 of them giving natural births and
caesarean sections, respectively.

Health teams, comprising 20 doctors and 670 workers, have been deputed to
Bhadrachalam to check epidemics and the spread of seasonal diseases due to
flooding.
