Thrissur: Jail DGP Rishiraj Singh transfers, suspends jail staff for torture

Thrissur: Director-general of prisons Rishiraj Singh on Friday conducted a flash visit to the Thrissur district jail at Viyyur and issued instant transfer order for almost all the officials in the prison except the superintendent and assistant superintendent.

It is learnt from sources that three prison officers (formerly called wardens) were given suspension orders after the prisoners complained to Mr Singh that the trio had been torturing them.

The remaining 38 officers who include assistant and deputy prison officers were given transfer orders to prisons outside the district.

Prisoners who are convicted for of six months and below are lodged in the district jail situated near the Viyyur central jail.

After several prisoners complained of torture at the hands of officers by taking their names, the jail doctor was summoned for a medical check- up of the prisoners. The check up confirmed torture, sources said.

The DG then promptly came up with the transfer and suspension orders.
