Thiruvananthapuram: Capital readies response teams

Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of incessant rains, the District Medical Office (DMO) has pressed Rapid Response Team (RRT) at all major to minor hospitals into action to combat casualties due to natural calamities including landslides, coastal erosion and flooding. It is learnt that there are a total of 107 which includes major hospitals, primary and community health centres.

DMO Preetha P P told DC that direction has been given to all institutions under DMO to activate the rapid response team. “District administration has issued a yellow alert in the district. The sea is rough and landslides, flooding is very common. We have to be prepared to face the worst. We have directed the head of the institution to open special wards for monsoon related havocs,” said the DMO.

The district has around 95 ambulances which include 70 palliative care ambulances, 23 normal ambulances and 2 life-saving ambulances. “We would be able to mobile more ambulances if the situation demands. In addition to this, there are 17 108 ambulances. If we need more we could depend on the Corporation,” said Preetha.

District Collector had chaired an inter-department meeting the other day to ensure effective coordination of various departments during emergencies. “We have given direction to all health institutions to stock adequate medicine to avoid shortage during emergencies. We have given charge to respective department heads to ensure coordination,” the official added.
