Hyderabad: The Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad, has introduced a new technology called Power Spiral Enteroscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal diseases.
The procedure uses a motorised endoscope which can be driven by a special motor into the small intestine and can visualise the entire 22 feet of the digestive track.
Besides using for diagnosis of cancer, bleeding and strictures of the small intestine, it can also be used as a therapeutic tool to remove these tumours or early cancers without invasive surgery.
In Asia Pacific region, this facility was available only in Japan. Doctors said this technique is a good addition to the minimal invasive technique to treat small bowel diseases which will be extremely beneficial for patients across the country.
Dr D. Nageshwar Reddy, chairman of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, said that technology would revolutionise the treatment of many gastrointestinal diseases.
