H D Kumaraswamy unfazed by jinxed' Bhagamandala
Bengaluru: There appears to be yet another “jinxed spot” in Karnataka besides Chamarajanagar. The superstitious in the state are keeping their fingers crossed as they believe Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s visit to Bhagamandala, the birth place of the River Cauvery in Kodagu district on Friday to offer thanksgiving for the good monsoon, could prove to be his downfall.
The basis for their worry is the fact that 19 years ago, the then Chief Minister, J H Patel lost power after visiting Bhagamandala. While former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah debunked the jinx attached to Chamarajanagar by visiting it several times to launch various development works during his tenure, Mr Kumaraswamy is likely to do the same with Bhagamandala as there are no plans to cancel the visit.
Sources close to the Chief Minister said he did not believe in such superstition and had readily agreed to visit Bhagamandala despite being advised against it by some. “Mr Kumaraswamy may be a God fearing person but he does not believe in superstition," they added.
"It's wrong to brand Bhagamandala as unlucky for CMs without any scientific basis. In fact, the place is very holy as Mother Cauvery provides water to lakhs of people across the state. Thousands of devotees visit the place every year and Bhagamandala is a famous pilgrimage centre,” said Mr V R Sudarshan, former chairman of the state Legislative Council, deploring that a similar tag was given to Chamarajanagar city. “Mr J H Patel lost power as his party was defeated by the electorate. It is not correct to link this with his visit to Bhagamandala,” he stressed.
