Rainstorm uproots trees, batters Hyderabad

Districts are under heavy rainfall warning till July 22.

Hyderabad: A rainstorm a short spell of intense rain hit Hyderabad with a 50-kmph gale on Wednesday. leaving behind ripped advertisement hoardings and a few fallen trees. The GHMC has now begun removing of ads from the hoardings.

The rainstorm was witnessed mostly in the north (Secunderabad), central (Khairatabad) and the west (Cyberabad) areas.

At day’s end, the GHMC counted 16 tree falls, water logging in 20 locations and a building collapse. There were 51 complaints of manholes overflowing. The GHMC recorded a total of 137 complaints.

On the electricity front, 16 localities reported no power supply and power lines were broken at 10 locations. One transformer caught fire.

Elsewhere in the city, commuters struggled through several kilometres of damaged roads, some of them falling in the process of avoding going into one.

The weather bureau said the southwest monsoon is vigorous over the state and all districts have been warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall up to July 22.

The monsoon current was revived by a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal, which has since dissipated.

The rain over the last two days has pushed up the average excess rainfall by 10 per cent.

The city on Thursday is expected to witness generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thunderstorm. The storm warning has been issued till July 24.

The city has recorded 15.48 cm rainfall so far this month, compared to the normal average of 17.92 cm.

On Wednesday, Adil-abad received 41 mm rainfall, Bhadrachalam 19 mm, Ramagundam 17 mm, Nalgonda 17 mm, Nizamabad 11 mm, Medak 10 mm, and Khammam received 9mm rainfall.
